Classes and Ensembles
Westgate Music School provides students with a wide variety of opportunities for performance and to develop their own creativity in a group setting under the guidance of our teachers. All classes and ensembles offered at Westgate Music School are run year round on 12-week cycles. At the end of each 12-week cycle, students will perform at the Westgate Music School Student Concert. In addition, classes and ensembles will have the opportunity to collaborate with each other on a variety of creative projects. Beginning Rock Band
The Beginning Rock Band course is designed for beginning to intermediate level students of any age who are looking to participate in their first rock band experience. All instruments are welcome. Students will be grouped by age, ability, and instrument into rock bands of 3-5 members. Under the guidance of one of our instructors, student groups will choose and rehearse popular songs from the Westgate Music School Beginning Rock Band Repertoire List and perform the selections at the Westgate Music School Student Concerts.
Advanced Rock Band
The Advanced Rock Band course is designed for intermediate to advanced level students of any age who are looking to participate in a complete rock band experience. All instruments are welcome. In addition to rehearsing and performing popular songs of their choice, students will also learn to compose their own songs, record them, upload them to popular websites such as Soundcloud and Bandcamp, and even produce music videos which will be uploaded to YouTube.
A Cappella Vocal Group
The A Cappella Vocal Group will focus on strengthening musicality with students vocally harmonizing in a variety of musical styles without accompaniment. This co-ed singing group will cover pop, classical, and alternative music in a fun, engaging environment with other enthusiastic singers. A desire to strengthen vocal technique through breathing, vocal exercises and originality are emphasized.
Computer Music Production
This class is for students seeking to learn the art of music production and composition using the latest computer software such as Garageband, Abelton Live, and others. Students of all ages and instruments are welcome. No previous experience on a musical instrument is necessary. Students will learn basic concepts related to computer music production such as equipment setup, working with beats and loops, virtual instruments, software plug-ins, basic audio recording, editing, mixing, and mastering. Students will compose their own music individually or in teams and feature them on the Westgate Music School Student Concerts as well as popular websites such as iTunes, Soundcloud, and YouTube.
Beginning DJ Techniques
The Beginning DJ class is for students seeking to learn the essential tools, techniques, and concepts required to become a successful DJ. No previous DJ experience is needed. Topics include equipment choice and setup, types of music (trance, house, deep, hip hop, etc.), beat mixing, tempo, pitch, EQ, effects, cuing, and jog wheel techniques. Students will have the opportunity to showcase their skills by mixing a short set at the Westgate Music School Student Concerts.
